The black blogosphere suffers yet another loss, as it has been reported today that Karyn Washington has died due to an apparent suicide. Karyn Washington was the founder of For Brown Girls, a movement started to celebrate the beauty of dark skin while combating colorism and promoting self love! FBG was created to celebrate darker shades of brown and to encourage those struggling with accepting having a darker skin complexion to love and embrace the skin they are in.
Washington also started the DarkSkinRedLip project, which knocked down beauty standards and encouraged black women to find and rock whatever shade of red lipstick best suited them. The project came about after the rapper A$AP Rocky said that women of color can’t wear red lipstick. Washington work hard to encourage a generation of women to love their natural selves and live their best lives. However, it is report that she was extremely depressed and found it hard to cope with the loss of her mother.
Many people take depression lightly but I know from personal experience that it is a very sad, lonely and dark situation. Depression robs it’s victims of both their mental and physical stability and should never be taken lightly. It is important that as people we rally around one another more than we do. Many times people go through things and they wear the mask for the world when on the inside they are dying and unable to deal with their daily existence much less living. That is why we have to practice being more present in the lives of our love ones. What could have been done to save this amazing 22 year old with so much potential and ambition. What more would the world have gained from her knowledge? Who knows, and who will ever know.
