One of my life’s joys is seeing women win, because when one of us win… WE ALL WIN! I am currently super excited for my homegirl (in my head), Teyana Taylor because she is really doing the damn thing. Teyana was recently named a brand ambassador for Reebok, combine that with her beautiful baby, Junie, her extra fine husband Iman Shumpert and a blossoming career, you must admit that Teyana is proving just how lit being a black girl can be.
Now I have never been a sneaker head but last year when Teyana and Reebok teamed up to release the red Question Mid’s I had to have them. As luck, would have it they were sold out everywhere but thanks to Reebok… got em! Now that the two have teamed up again, I am looking forward to copping the re-released “FreeStyle Hi” too.
Anytime I see Teyana’s body, I immediately swoon (no homo) but the message associated with her Free Your Style campaign really made me appreciate this collabo more. During an interview, with Teen Vogue, Teyana explained that while the FreeStyle Hi is a fitness shoe and “fitness is an obsession” of hers, this campaign is about more than fitness. For Teyana, this campaign is about encouraging women and girls to tap into their super powers because they are there. Teyana explained that just like Batman and Robin, who go out and fight battles every day, we each must fight our own battles. Our bodies carry us through those battles and reflect what we’ve been through. That, Teyana said, “is beautiful.
Teyana went on to admit that while we look at her and see body goals, she still has moment of insecurities like any other woman. However, she understands that “Every stretch mark, every sag, every dimple, cellulite, it all comes from sacrifices and love.”
Yes Teyana, you know I am here for it… I am a fat, bold and beautiful super hero and all I want to do is show other women in my image that they are super heroes too. As women (black, White, fat, single mother…) it is so important that we embrace and understand the message behind this campaign. No, I’m not saying buy the sneakers (although I am going to), I am saying absorb the fact that you are a super hero. Oh, and while our battles may have left us with scars, know that they are an indicators of just how much strength we have and just how capable we are of taking over the world… AND THAT WILL ALWAYS BE BEAUTIFUL!
