I don’t talk about my breast a lot because I have a love/hate relationship with them. It is no secret that I kicked cancer’s ass seven years ago. It is also no secret that I underwent a breast reduction too. I have to say if it wasn’t for surgeons like Dr. Jeffrey Swail, my confidence would probably have been very little or possibly non existent. A change in appearance can make all the difference to how you end up feeling. There’s nothing wrong in changing something about yourself if you are not happy with it. Whether you decide to look into having Breast Reduction in Tulsa, OK or want to go for a Brazilian Butt lift in New York, as long as you are doing it for the right reasons, that’s all that matters.
So yeah, while my breast are a part of my body and I love them, but these two babies have put me through hell and I hated that! I know this is a problem that many women have been through in their lives. Thankfully, many of the places offering plastic surgery austin, and elsewhere, also offer breast reduction as part of their list of services. It’s two sides of the same coin: some want to enhance and enlarge their breasts so that they can feel more confident and attractive whereas some want reduction for many of the same reasons and also for the relief to some of the physical side effects having very large breasts brings.
As a girl I was picked on because I developed early and by the third grade, I had a full rack. This was embarrassing on so many levels; being referred to as big titty Maui by other kids, having blood stains on the shoulders of my shirts from super tight bra straps and being called “fast” by adults all because Mother Nature started working on me a whole lot sooner than other girls my age. While all of that was awful, the worse was me being sexualized my grown ass men. They looked at me and saw ass and titties, never mind the fact that I was ten years old.
As an adult, two events involving my breast changed my life. The first event took place thirteen years ago when I was finally able to have a breast reduction (insert happy twerk). The second event happened on October 12, 2010 when my doctor told me I had breast cancer. After this, I was convinced… my left breast was trying to kill me! So yeah, now you know why I love and hate these two.
Some see scars as ugly imperfections. I see scars as a beautiful reminders of who I am and who I am not. Yes, cancer attacked me and my breast but these scars remind me that I am a survivor. These scars remind me that although life may give me hell occasionally, I am up for the fight because I am not a quitter. Most of all, these scars remind me that pain, fear and adversity are temporary and that I am too great to cower. #phatgirlfresh #breastcancerawareness #breastcancerawarenessmonth
Crazy thing is, for all the hardships I experienced due to my breast, I never learned many of the things that I needed to know… Until now! Immediately following my first surgery I knew that there was a huge difference in my breast (duh). It literally took me an entire year to learn my bra size, figure out what bras worked for me and get comfortable with the little tomatoes on my chest that were once four huge melons.
Because I would hate for you to experience the headaches I did and waste the time and money I wasted in search of bras that were comfortable, fit properly and (of course) cute, I am sharing. Thank God for LiviRae Lingerie because they taught me so much, I only wish it had been sooner. However, now that I know better, I do better and I share as much as I can with other women and girls, especially my daughter.
For all my survivors of breast cancer or breast surgery read below to learn the truth about bras and your breast post-surgery.
PROTECT THE BOOBIES, WEAR A BRA! If you are a cancer survivor who underwent a mastectomy and are having reconstructive surgery or a woman who chooses to enhance her breast; please wear a bra. Breast implants are added weight to the chest wall, if you don’t wear a bra, you run the risk of becoming a member of the droopy boobie community. If you’re looking for a reputable place to have breast implants, visit Sachin Shridharani at Luxurgery.
“NO WIRE HANGERS (in my Mommy Dearest voice), BUT YES TO UNDERWIRE BRAS! I know a lot of women hate underwire bras but I love them. After being a little girl with big pointy breast, I appreciate the way underwire bra make my breast look. The key to underwire bras post-surgery is proper fit; the wire should lay flat against your ribcage and not on your breast.
DON’T CHEAT YOURSELF, TREAT YOURSELF! If you have new boobs, you need new bras! Yeah, I know that bras aren’t cheap but you have to take care of your investment. I mean, would you put regular gas in a Rolls Royce?
NO PUSH UPS! Say “NO NO NO NO NO (in my Destiny’s Child voices) to push up bras, they are not your friend. I know we all want to show a little cleavage but push up bras can cause indention in breast and encapsulation. Oh, and did you know that an underwire bra can give you just as much cleavage as a push up bra.
ABC’S AND 123’S! When trying on new bras to accommodate your new breast remember, your letter will change but your number will remain the same. While it may take a while to figure it all out, know that the letter isn’t important… IT IS ALL ABOUT THE FIT!
