My Style Journal: Life Is Gucci Or Is It

Hey PHAT girls, happy Friday!

Something that has become crystal clear to me over the years is that perception based on sight can be misleading. I know that we all have seen something or someone and at first (maybe even second) glance, came to a conclusion that turned out to be far from the truth. This is because although it is cliche, LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING! Which is why It is important that we understand that just because life looks Gucci, doesn’t mean that it always is.

All my Reggies know that I am a true country girl, I was born and raised (partially) in rural Georgia. However, my mother made sure that I was exposed to different things and people, we traveled and she kept my nose in books. She would also tell me things that she had learned while she was in The Job Corp and from reading books that I hadn’t read yet. So, I guess you can say that I am cultured.

Through all of my experiences, I became a people watcher at a very young age. As a young girl trying to find my way, I have to say that people watching many times left me confused and making assumptions about things that I knew nothing about. You know how it is, you see celebrities with money and think… They are rich, they have accesses to the finest things, they must be happy. However, the truth is money and materialistic item will never penetrate your soul; so yeah, I was wrong.

Today, as a grown woman who is still a people watcher, I understand that seeing is not always believing. You can’t look at a person and tell how happy or unhappy they are. Hell, I have laughed, spoke positive and showed love to others all while I was in the midst of some of my greatest storms. It is what Paul Lawrence Dunbar called wearing the mask.

It is my belief that we all have worn the mask at some point in our lives, simply put, it is when your head and your heart are in a dark place but you pretend that things are “Gucci”. I guess we do it to avoid being labeled a Debbie Downer or to evade our truth because no one ever wants to embrace being depressed openly.

Perception based on sight goes beyond assumptions about life, it can also be experience via fashion. Currently, there is a trend among influencers who create fashion content, it is the Gucci belt. Yes honey, they even have a name; the Gucci Belt Gang. They are fashion mavens slaying the scene with looks that pop style with the help of this piece from the iconic brand, MAYBE! Now my maybe isn’t shade because I would gladly join the Gucci Belt Gang if my waist was smaller. The maybe is due to the fact that so many foreign companies are creating “Knock off’s” that are damn near identical to the originals, you just never know. Oh and yes sis, that last sentence holds true in life also because like I said, WE WEAR THE MASK!

My truth is, I have battled depression and worn the mask but, today is a good day. I feel amazing and refreshed and I am looking forward to the weekend. My nephew who is a high school senior is graduating for college tomorrow. My sonshine is headed home for Christmas break. My best year ever, 2019 is less than a month away and I could go on and on! So yeah, LIFE IS GUCCI, but this duster isn’t!
